Research, Scholarly, & Creative Activity Development: Research Paper

During the Fall 2022 semester at Minnesota State University Mankato, I took a management course titled “Leadership”. One of the main objectives of the course was to understand the differences between leadership and management. Many people believe that leaders and managers are synonymous with each other, but they are actually very different. To both assist with my understanding of the topic and prove my comprehension, I was required to write a research essay. The essay highlighted the differences between leadership and management in definitions, responsibilities, and performances goals, including a chronological overview of common leadership theories. Although the class textbook was one primary source of information, I used five other peer reviewed sources as well. This paper was certainly the most formal one I have had to write in my college career, and I learned a lot.

One thing I learned was how to search for good sources of information. Although I primarily used MavScholar (MNSU’s online database for articles, books, etc.), I believe the techniques I used can transfer to other types of research I conduct in the future. When using a search engine, I found it was important to use all relevant filters. If I only wanted to see articles from the past five years, I made sure to select the corresponding filters, otherwise I would have to sort through many unnecessary sources. I also learned that what keywords you use to search are extremely important. Sometimes, one phrase you try does not bring the information you for which you are looking. It is critical that you do not just give up on the search, but either try shortening the phrase or use synonyms. I found my best sources for this essay after rewording my searches multiple times.

Another important thing I learned from writing this essay was how to organize and synthesize various perspectives. There is a ton of completed research in the business community on leaders and managers. A key aspect of my essay was to bring multiple perspectives together to explain each point. One of the most interesting parts of this process is using two very different sources to explain one element. For example, one of my sources discussed a leader’s role in workplace safety and a different source described leadership in new nurses, but I was able to use both perspectives to demonstrate the definition of a leader. I integrated each perspective into my paper by summarizing their viewpoints, citing their author using APA format, and then dictating how the combination of these multiple perspectives explains my take on each topic.

Finally, in addition to all I learned regarding how to write a research paper, I also learned a lot about the differences between leaders and managers. One of the most important things to note is that the two are not interchangeable. Managers may be leaders, but they also are responsible for nonleading activities such as planning strategies and controlling costs. Leaders are not always managers, either; it is very common for those with no power to influence their peers, both positively and negatively. Now that I have gained this research-backed knowledge, I can use it in my future business career.

While I do not believe I will ever be writing research papers as a future human resources professional, I do think the skills I used to write this paper will be of great use. Being able to find multiple reliable sources and then use those sources to explain a point is valuable for any professional. Although these skills could be used in obvious areas of HR research, I think such skills could even be used in employee relation situations, such as performance evaluations. In addition, HR professionals are required to stay up to date on employment laws and regulations. To do this, they must know how to find reliable sources and evaluate their context. I feel that I practiced this ability through this experience, better preparing me for my future.
